Ravens blast Giants 24-10

Week three of the preseason is considered the “dress rehearsal” for NFL teams. If Saturday night was the Baltimore Ravens’ dress rehearsal the show should be a good one this season.

Quarterback Joe Flacco and offensive coordinator Cam Cameron didn’t waste any time establishing the fact that the Ravens will be able to pass the ball this year. Flacco was 21-for-34 for 229 yards with two touchdowns and one interception. He completed passes to multiple receivers and even was Baltimore’s leading rusher. Flacco’s two touchdowns came to Anquan Boldin and Todd Heap over the middle of the field. In the past two seasons, Flacco may not have thrown it over the middle even with single coverage on the receiver, but he looks much improved in 2010.

Ravens dominate Redskins 23-3

The Baltimore Ravens got their second win in as many tries this preseason Saturday night. Baltimore’s first-team offense played a full half against the Washington Redskins.

Joe Flacco went 9-for-16, completing passes to several different receivers, including new acquisitions Donte’ Stallworth and Anquan Boldin. Ray Rice didn’t get many opportunities to rush the ball as the team is protecting him for the regular season, but he ran for 17 yards on just three carries. The offensive line was good at times, but Michael Oher got pushed around a little bit.

Ravens Make Some Roster Moves

Tuesday, the Baltimore Ravens cut Steve Hauschka. Wednesday, they made a move to fill his roster spot.

The Ravens signed kicker Billy Cundiff Wednesday to be their new kicker. After Dallas let Cundiff walk he signed with New Orleans in 2006 and hadn’t made an appearance in the NFL until the Cleveland Browns signed him earlier this season. During his time in Cleveland, he went 6-for-6 on field goal attempts and 4-for-4 on extra point tries. I hope Cundiff is a better kicker than Hauschka turned out to be for Baltimore.

The other roster move that was made was the Ravens placed Haruki Nakamura on injured reserve with a broken right ankle. Nakamura’s ankle was broken on the opening kickoff Monday night. To replace Nakamura on the 53-man roster, the Ravens elevated K.J. Gerard from their practice squad.

I liked Gerard in the preseason and apparently, the Ravens did too. Gerard will mostly, if not exclusively, play special teams. I’m happy to see another young player get a shot.

In other news, Terrell Suggs is out Sunday and could be out for at least two weeks. Suggs has a badly sprained knee, if not a partially torn ligament. I expect Suggs to do everything he can to get on the field for at least one of the Steelers games coming up in Weeks 12 and 16.
