Wilson’s INT delivers victory, bails out Cameron

It was a familiar script for the Baltimore Ravens (9-4) Monday night. A big lead heading in to the fourth quarter and a struggling second half offense. That’s summed up the Ravens for much of the season and the Houston Texans (5-8) just followed in the path of other teams.

Quarterback Joe Flacco got the offense off to a fast start that could have been faster if Derrick Mason would have caught a perfectly thrown ball down the middle of the field. Instead, Mason dropped it. Towards the end of the quarter, however, Flacco was able to get the offense going away and running back Willis McGahee finished off the drive with a one-yard run.

Gearing up for Houston

After a heartbreaker against the Pittsburgh Steelers Sunday night, the Baltimore Ravens have another chance to take the field in primetime. This time, Monday night against the struggling Houston Texans.

The Ravens are now the sixth seed and need to win to make a playoff push. On the other side of the ball, Houston needs to win to stay in the AFC South division race.

However, this game heavily favors the Ravens. Houston’s defense, their pass defense in particular, has been very bad all season long. After the questionable play calls during last Sunday’s game, expect offensive coordinator Cam Cameron to open the offense and let Joe Flacco throw the ball around to Anquan Boldin, Derrick Mason, T.J, Houshmandzadeh and Donte’ Stallworth. Additionally, Ray Rice should have a big day if Baltimore is playing with a lead.

Ravens versus Broncos…as seen from the other side

As a lifelong Denver Broncos fan living in Baltimore, I know you Ravens fans all too well. On one hand, you’re as loyal to your team as any fans in the league; every win is as big as if it were the postseason, and every loss sinks your heart for days to come. On the other hand, you think you’re better at calling plays than Cam Cameron*, you think you’re a better judge of talent than Ozzie Newsome, and you genuinely feel that a Super Bowl berth is a foregone conclusion. On top of that, you’ve got a certain arrogance befitting of a franchise that has a decades-long legacy of excellence, and which plays in the Super Bowl every year. (That would make the Ravens a combination of the Washington Redskins of old and the New England Patriots of today…and that, my friend, is not at all the case).

Now, to be clear, I didn’t say all of that to get your blood boiling (although I have no doubt it’ll do just that); rather, it explains why I’d love to see the Broncos come to M&T Bank Stadium and knock Ravens Nation off its pedestal.

Stick with me now, as I lead you through my thinking on how this can happen.

Flacco throws away game in loss to Bengals

It certainly didn’t take long for the Baltimore Ravens to get their first loss of the season. The Cincinnati Bengals intercepted quarterback Joe Flacco four times on their way to a 15-10 victory.

Sunday can be classified as Flacco’s worst day as a professional so far. His mechanics were off, he was forcing passes and looked confused in the pocket at times.

One positive of Flacco’s performance was his touchdown to Derrick Mason in the third quarter which was the only touchdown of the game.

T.J. Houshmandzadeh didn’t help his struggling quarterback much, dropping three passes. Houshmandzadeh has the reputation of being reliable, but he looked anything except reliable Sunday.

Ravens blast Giants 24-10

Week three of the preseason is considered the “dress rehearsal” for NFL teams. If Saturday night was the Baltimore Ravens’ dress rehearsal the show should be a good one this season.

Quarterback Joe Flacco and offensive coordinator Cam Cameron didn’t waste any time establishing the fact that the Ravens will be able to pass the ball this year. Flacco was 21-for-34 for 229 yards with two touchdowns and one interception. He completed passes to multiple receivers and even was Baltimore’s leading rusher. Flacco’s two touchdowns came to Anquan Boldin and Todd Heap over the middle of the field. In the past two seasons, Flacco may not have thrown it over the middle even with single coverage on the receiver, but he looks much improved in 2010.

Beck traded away to Redskins

The Baltimore Ravens decided that Troy Smith will be the team’s third quarterback this season. Unless something unusual with the roster happens, Smith will be in the emergency quarterback as the Ravens traded away John Beck.

Beck was a second-round pick by the Miami Dolphins in 2007, Ravens offensive coordinator Cam Cameron’s only season as head coach. He will now be a Washington Redskin.

Ravens get QB insurance

In a surprise move, the Baltimore Ravens have agreed to a one-year $3.8 million contract with former Rams quarterback Marc Bulger, according to multiple sources. Bulger has the chance to earn $5.3 million if all of his incentives are met.

This signing shows two things. First, the Ravens want to cover themselves in case starter Joe Flacco has injuries during the 2010 season. Flacco battled injuries for much of the second part of last season, but played through them and, in my opinion, because the Ravens’ coaching staff didn’t have enough confidence in Troy Smith or John Beck.

Colts trounce Ravens 20-3

The Baltimore Ravens went in to Indianapolis a confident team after giving the New England Patriots a beat down. They left a confident team with no game next week.

Baltimore’s Divisional Round game against the Colts started out in promising fashion. Their defense held the Colts to a field goal on the opening drive of the game and then answered the bell with an 87 yard drive that resulted in a field goal. At the time, this drive seemed like a success for the Ravens, but it wasn’t. On the drive, Joe Flacco threw a sure touchdown pass to Le’Ron McClain that was dropped. This was the last time the Ravens got anywhere near sniffing the end zone.

What to expect on Sunday

For the Baltimore Ravens, Sunday represents a playoff game. If they win, they make the dance, if they lose, they’re going to need a whole lot of help. The Ravens know the ramifications of a loss and will do everything they can to not let it happen.

The Oakland Raiders are just trying to play spoiler. Oakland knows its season is over, but they have shown some improvement along with some regression.

Ravens roll over Lions 48-3

The Baltimore Ravens finally looked like a playoff against a lesser opponent. Baltimore ran through, over and around the Detroit Lions to cruise to an easy 48-3 win Sunday.

Joe Flacco was removed from the game after the third quarter as I thought he would be if the Ravens were far enough in front of the Lions. Flacco was efficient and didn’t turn the ball over. That was great to see. Flacco has been turning the ball over with regularity and it was good to see him take care of the football Sunday. Troy Smith came in to relieve Flacco and got in to the end zone on a broken play. Smith did a nice little dance to cap off the scoring for Baltimore.

Cam Cameron finally took the air out of the ball and had the Ravens offense wear out the Detroit defense. Ray Rice ran for over 100 yards in the first half, also cracking the 1,000-yard mark for the first time in his career. Rice left the game early in the third quarter because of a chest injury, but could have come back in if the game was closer.

Since Rice was knocked out, Willis McGahee replaced him and scored two touchdowns. He also had a field day against the Lions defense. McGahee rushed for 76 yards before giving way to Jalen Parmele in the fourth quarter. The other part of the Ravens backfield, Le’Ron McClain, was able to get in on the fun, scoring a touchdown in the third quarter.

On the defensive side of the ball, the secondary played well shutting down Calvin Johnson and picking off two passes.. However, the defensive line didn’t get any pressure on Daunte Culpepper. It wasn’t an issue against Detroit, but with Pittsburgh coming up in Week 16, and then maybe the playoffs, the Ravens need to do something to get pressure on the quarterback.

So, after rolling over the Lions the Ravens are now 7-6 with three teams under .500 on their schedule coming up. If they run the table and win out the will earn a wild card berth. The other interesting part of the Ravens winning out is if Cincinnati loses out. If the Bengals somehow lose out they will go 9-7 and finish in second place in the division giving the Ravens the division title. Although the second scenario is unlikely, anything is possible in the NFL.
